Have plans this summer? Looking to learn, grow, and connect with other social-justice leaders working with youth, food, and community across the U.S.? Join The Food Project at our 2019 Summer Institute, July 31 - August 2!

With the farms in full bloom and Seed Crew youth hitting their stride, summer is hands-down the best time of year to experience The Food Project.

Since 2000, The Food Project’s Institute has welcomed hundreds of individuals from near and far for an immersive training in youth development, sustainable agriculture, and community partnerships striving to create a more equitable food system for all.

“The Institute is a place for people of all backgrounds to explore issues of youth empowerment, experiential education, equity in youth work and so much more. It is a place where you can be creative about solutions for organizational issues and deeply connect to the power of young people.”  - Ricki H., LEAF Project, PA

Held twice a year—once in the summer and once in the winter—the Institutes aim to inspire and support others in the food movement to adapt The Food Project’s models of bridging difference, expanding food access, and developing young leaders in their own communities.

“This was a deeply immersive experience and opportunity. It allows space for participants to take ideas from The Food Project and transform them to fit their local food economy.” - Denele H., Grow Pittsburgh, PA

This February, 28 participants traveled from across the country to attend our Winter Institute—for three days packed with in-depth workshops, immersive activities, and engaging conversation.

“Anyone in education or farming should get up and GO! It was super powerful to understand the possibilities and purpose in which youth leadership development can happen. It doesn’t matter if the model of their organization is similar to TFP, there are so many take aways and moments of learning.” - Emily P., The Rivers School, MA

We were thrilled to have the support of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, which sponsored the Winter Institute and supported the training with a warm welcome and a presentation on engaging with volunteer groups.

“We were proud to support The Food Project’s Winter Institute this year, not only providing training to younger organizations working with youth and agriculture, but also learning opportunities based on the successes and challenges The Food Project has experienced over its 28-year history” - Karen Voci, President of HPHCF, MA

One of the highlights of the Institutes is the breadth of experience and wisdom that each participant brings to the learning environment. This winter’s cohort did not shy away from tackling difficult topics.

“We were given the space to ask hard questions and grapple with what this work really is. We were provided with a variety of lenses through which to look at our work, which deepened my ability to talk about and think critically about what I do. It was an incredible experience and I hope to come back with new students each year!” - Malka R., City Blossoms, DC

It was an honor to host such an inspiring group of thoughtful, committed leaders. We hope the connections made at our Institutes last well beyond the training, and that participants continue to call upon each other as resources and partners in their work.

“I can’t wait to get back home and share my inspiration with others. Meeting others like me (you know, leaders in the food movement) was amazing! I was with them for 3 days and feel like I have known them forever!” - Arlen F., La Semilla Food Center, NM

Registration is now open for the Summer Institute, and more information can be found at thefoodproject.org/institute. We can’t wait to see you there!
